DONG Energy has awarded a £21.8 million contract to J. Murphy & Sons Limited for construction of an onshore substation for the Race Bank offshore wind farm development project.
Race Bank, when operational, will have a capacity of up to 580 megawatts, enough to power over 400,000 UK homes. The wind farm will be located almost 17 miles off Blakeney Point on the North Norfolk Coast, and a similar distance from the Lincolnshire coast at Chapel St. Leonards.
The onshore substation being constructed by Murphy will be located adjacent to the National Grid Walpole Substation. It will include all necessary equipment required to transmit power from the offshore wind farm to the national grid network.
Thomas Karst, Programme Director for Race Bank at DONG Energy, said:
"DONG Energy is absolutely committed to investing in the UK, so we are delighted to offer this very significant contract to Murphy.
"Race Bank is an exciting project and this agreement with Murphy for construction of an onshore substation is a vital piece of work as development moves forward."
John B. Murphy, Managing Director North at Murphy, commented:
"We are delighted to be awarded the Race Bank offshore wind farm contract and to have the opportunity to work with DONG Energy again.
"Renewable energy is crucial to the UK – and we're pleased to be a part of this project which will support both future economic growth and more resilient infrastructure. We look forward to working closely with client DONG Energy to safely and innovatively address the challenges that lie ahead and achieve sustainable efficiencies."
Business and Energy Minister Matthew Hancock said:
"It's great to see new investment flowing into East Anglia as well as more good news for those businesses, across the UK, who form the supply chain.
"Our long-term economic plan is bringing down the national debt, securing investment into the UK and making sure young people have the right skills to get on in life."
The onshore substation construction work at Race Bank is expected to be completed in 2016.
