DONG Energy are planning to build an offshore wind farm at Race Bank in the Greater Wash off the coast of Norfolk and Lincolnshire. The project received consent (known as a section 36 consent) from the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in July 2012. DONG Energy has now applied to DECC to vary this consent to allow the construction of two higher capacity offshore substations rather than the three substations currently allowed. This will enable us to transmit the electricity generated by the wind turbines at 220kV to the National Grid and reduce the number of power cables needed under the seabed from three to two. In seeking to standardise our use of these higher capacity offshore substations we aim to reduce the cost of electricity production in line with Government ambitions to reduce the cost of renewable energy.
UPDATE: DECC granted this consent variation on 25th March 2015. See here for more details.
