“Taking control of our energy consumption through effective monitoring, account management and billing is a strategic priority”
Allied Glass Containers is the fourth largest glass container manufacturer in the United Kingdom, accounts for around 60% of all UK glass production and produces a total of 2.3 million tonnes of glass on average a year. With two modern manufacturing facilities and a workforce of over 600, Allied Glass has the ability to produce 13 million containers every week.
For Allied Glass Containers, effective energy management and supply is of paramount importance. Glass manufacture is an energy-intensive process (80% of natural gas consumed is used to fire the high-temperature furnaces) so the company, is focused on reducing its energy consumption and costs.
“For us, taking control of our energy consumption through effective monitoring, account management and billing is a strategic priority and DONG Energy has been able to support us in this process.” says Gary Law, Strategic Buyer at Allied Glass Containers. “Furthermore, the flexible gas product enables us to apply a hedging strategy and reduce the amount of risk premiums we pay."
Allied Glass produces up to 13 million containers every week. Its two furnaces in Leeds have a combined maximum capacity of 550 tonnes of glass, feeding nine production lines. There are a further two flint furnaces at Knottingley, serving seven production lines. One of the Knottingley furnaces produces premium quality glass, the other has a glass colouring system.
Law says, “The bulk of our energy spend is used for melting raw materials within high temperature furnaces in order to fuse materials together. For us, it is key to have a strategy in place to monitor when we fire our furnaces in order to help reduce costs. This is why it's vital for us to partner with a supplier that produces transparent, accurate bills in a timely manner, and has a knowledgeable account management system in place to discuss demand."
“These are some of the reasons we work with DONG Energy. The account management is excellent - it has been a vast improvement on our previous experiences. Bills have always reached us on time and we have never had to query them.”
