History
DONG Energy was established in 2006 by the merger of six Danish energy companies: DONG, Elsam, Energi E2, Nesa, Københavns Energi and Frederiksberg Forsyning.
Activities throughout the value chain
The merger brought together a wide range of experience, resources and activities, including:
- oil and natural gas exploration and production
- electricity generation at power stations and renewable energy facilities
- natural gas and electricity distribution
- sales and energy advice
Oil and natural gas exploration and production
We have been exploring for and producing oil and natural gas since 1984. Our activities are focused in the waters around Denmark, Norway, the United Kingdom (West of Shetland area), the Faroe Islands and Greenland.
Natural gas distribution to West and South Zealand and South Jutland
DONG Energy’s gas distribution can be traced as far back as 1857, when Københavns Energi started using gas for street lighting. Since then, the use of gas has evolved to include heating and cooking. When DONG started up production in the North Sea in 1984, natural gas was introduced in Denmark as a cleaner alternative to coal gas. DONG Energy distributes natural gas to West and South Zealand and South Jutland and sells natural gas across Denmark, South Sweden and the Netherlands. Based on our extensive knowledge, we offer our customers advise on energy savings, natural gas agreements, choice of boiler, service agreements and safety when working with and around gas installations.
Electricity supply to North Zealand and Greater Copenhagen
DONG Energy has been involved since the early days of electricity generation at the start of the 20th century. Since then, our electricity grid has grown to include all of North Zealand, the city of Roskilde, and Greater Copenhagen. Following the deregulation of the electricity market, we have also been selling electricity and related services to customers outside these grid districts and have developed a strong profile in the fields of energy advice, customer service and reliable energy supplies.
Electricity generation
We have more than 50 years of experience in electricity and heat generation at central power stations in Denmark. Since the 1970s, we have converted our generation processes and facilities from solely oil-based to more diverse sources of energy such as:
- introducing some of the world’s most efficient coal-fired processes
- recycling residual products from these processes
- international cutting-edge expertise in wind energy
- developing energy resources from waste and straw
Today, most electricity and heat is generated at central coal-fired, gas-fired and biomass-fired CHP plants in Denmark and at new gas-fired power stations in Norway, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
International wind power projects
Over 20 years’ experience of offshore wind farm development makes DONG Energy the current market leader in offshore wind power. DONG Energy’s offshore wind farms are predominantly based in North West Europe, and we have built more offshore wind farms than any other company in the world.
Trading in North European energy markets
We supply energy to customers in the Danish, Swedish, German, Dutch and United Kingdom markets and trade on European energy hubs and exchanges. We have access to long-term energy supplies and infrastructure in Denmark and internationally to ensure a convenient, flexible supply of energy.
